When candidates run for Congress, they spend so much time chasing big donations from wealthy donors, there's little time left to talk with voters.  Big donors choose who runs and ultimately who wins the race and ends up in Congress.

We've seen the results of our current system: the pay-to-play scandals involving Tom DeLay, Bob Ney, Randy "Duke" Cunningham and others that highlight the problems created by a system that is overflowing with money - money intended to influence the decisions of our nation's lawmakers.

Full public financing of elections of Congressional campaigns can fundamentally change how our political system works and restore public confidence in the integrity of our democracy by:

  • Severing  the direct link between big money and our elected officials
  • Limiting spending overall and reducing the spending gap between incumbents and challengers
  • Giving voters more choice at the polls and increasing the competitiveness of elections
  • Freeing candidates from the money chase so that they can focus on communicating with voters

Common Cause is working to give voters more control over their government again.  You can help by taking action now!  We need to pass Fair Elections now.

States are already passing this reform - Arizona, Maine, Connecticut and others. And the public is strongly supportive, as this June 2006 poll shows.

Here's what others are saying about Fair Elections: major newspaperselected officials, and Sen. Richard Durbin speaking on the Senate floor.
